Posture is an important aspect of our physical health and well-being. It has experienced drastic changes over the years.

In past generations, people were instructed to keep their spines in a straight line, sometimes even resorting to back braces or other contraptions to force themselves into a rigid position.

Whilst there is still a lot more research to do in regard to posture, we have come a long way. These days good posture is focused more about positioning your body in a way that allows your muscles and joints to be in the most comfortable position.

Technology has had a huge impact on making our posture worse. Our increased use of smartphones and computers can lead to unhealthy body postures, such as slouching in chairs or leaning forward while using electronic devices. Prolonged exposure to these activities can cause all sorts of musculoskeletal issues.

Why is good posture important?

Good posture is important because it helps to keep your bones and joints in the correct alignment. Poor posture can put extra strain on your muscles, joints, and spine which can lead to pain and discomfort.

Key benefits of good posture:

  • Can help ensure that your body is properly aligned, making it easier for you to move with ease

  • Helps support your muscles to move more efficiently

  • Helps improve circulation by allowing blood to flow freely throughout the body

  • Help prevent future back and neck strain

  • Promotes self-confidence as well as a positive attitude (poor posture is often associated with an inactive lifestyle or low self-esteem).

Can a chiropractor fix my posture?

No referral needed, primary health care givers

Chiropractic treatment focuses on the spine, which is at the center of the body's structural system and a major contributor to overall posture.

Through a variety of chiropractic adjustments and exercises, a chiropractor will realign the spine to help improve posture, reduce pain, and restore range of motion.

Can osteopathy help with posture?

Treatment and Injury plan

Osteopaths seek to restore balance, function and mobility to the body through gentle manipulations of muscles, ligaments and joints. By using gentle manipulations of the body’s soft tissues and joints, along with exercise therapy, an osteopath is able to help the body to heal itself and reach its optimum level of health.

How can myotherapy and massage help with my posture?

Tertiary trained therapists

All of our therapists can help reduce hypertonic (tight) muscles and fascia, which is an important connective tissue of the body and helps keep tissues together in their proper place.  Any disturbances to these areas can occur with poor posture and equally it can also hinder you from trying to improve your posture.

The right formula

Each modality above has its own approach but the end goal is still to improve musculoskeletal tension and weakness with a hands on approach and exercise advice in order to help maintain those changes.

Balloon Posture Exercise

One simple way to improve your posture is to imagine you have a large helium balloon tied to a string that is attached to the top of your head. Now imagine that balloon drawing you upwards towards the ceiling or sky. This is a great exercise to help you stand straighter and face life front on.

Stretch your body upwards
