Supporting Men's Health: Our Mission this Movember

Posted Wednesday, Nov 1, 2023 by . Filed under General

November in Australia brings not only the promise of warmer days but also the annual Movember campaign. Beyond the quirky mustache-growing, Movember's true essence lies in encouraging men to prioritize their health.

Movember beginnings

The Movember tradition began in Melbourne, Australia in 2003, when two mates were inspired by their friend’s mother who was fundraising for breast cancer. They convinced their mates to grow a moustache and wear it as a “pink ribbon but for men”.

Initially, the focus was on prostate and testicular cancer. Now, the month of November is an opportunity to spread awareness about a variety of men’s health topics, namely mental illness and suicide.

Prostate Cancer in Australia

Prostate cancer is a significant concern for men's health in Australia. It's the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Australian men.

In 2021, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reported that there were approximately 24,700 new cases of prostate cancer in the country, and sadly, around 3,330 men lost their lives to the disease.

The key to improving survival rates is early detection through regular screenings. Break the ”taboo” today and encourage the men in your life to discuss prostate cancer screenings with their healthcare providers.

Testicular Cancer in Australia:

Testicular cancer, though relatively rare, primarily affects young men aged 15 to 44.

In Australia, the Cancer Council reported that approximately 903 new cases were diagnosed in 2021, with around 23 men losing their lives to this disease.

Early detection is crucial for better outcomes. Men should conduct regular self-exams and seek medical advice if they notice any unusual changes.

Male Suicide and Mental Illness in Australia:

In addition to physical health, it's essential to address the mental well-being of Australian men.

Shockingly, the Movember Foundation notes that in Australia, six men die by suicide every day. Mental illness rates are also significant, with many men experiencing conditions such as depression and anxiety.

The stigma surrounding mental health can deter help seeking, lets break this pattern and start the conversation with the men in your life, assuring them that seeking support is a sign of strength.

How to Support Men's Health in Australia:

1. Foster open conversations: Create a supportive space for men to express their concerns about physical and mental health. Encourage open dialogue without judgment.

2. Promote regular check-ups: Encourage men to conduct regular self-exams and visit their healthcare providers for routine check-ups and screenings.

3. Join the Movember movement: Get involved by growing a moustache, fundraising, or simply spreading awareness.

Ready Set Mo!

Movember is a time when Australians unite to empower men to take charge of their health and well-being. Together, we can break down the barriers preventing Australian men from seeking help and work towards a healthier and more informed future.
